to good use, eventually turning them into renewable energy. this is the demonstration just about an hour ago here outside city hall as workers put a couple dozen trees in to the chipper. crews from the recycling contractor will begin collecting people's old trees starting next week. workers expect in the end to recycle more than 500-tons of trees. the manager said all of those wood chips can be burned. the heat turns the generator and creates power. when you put your old tree out on the curb for pick up make sure to take everything off it. >> if the lights and ornaments still on it we can't put it in the chipper, it'll contaminate the load, ruin the product. if it's not stripped of all those things that will go into the trash and to the landfill. we don't want that. >> reporter: if you live in san francisco, you can pit your tree out on the curb starting next wednesday, january 2nd, put it out onto normal collection day next to the trash bin and the folks will come by and grab it. the program will go for two weeks and there is no charge. >> tornados in the south and snow in the midwes

. some rain is trying to get its act together, especially in the north so far i think the rain energy is back behind us t. is the cloud rain forecast. sometimes the models don't handle these systems very well but we're okay and by this evening we'll start to cloud up, there it is some of the rain starting to spin up late tonight into early saturday. heading into tahoe which is mainly cloud. clouded up today and sunday. it will be warmer due to the cloud cover but not much. but monday clear and mostly sunny, but lows back near 0 like today. rain along the coast to the north but not until later on. upper 50s, low 50s so it's a chilly morning out there. no doubt about it. bundle up, we won't be very warm today. clouds will continue to be with us into saturday and some of the rain should be out of here saturday morning. cold and breezy on sunday. a fast moving system maybe on monday, but then mostly sunny and rather brisk on tuesday. >> all right. 7:39, a rare tornado touchdown in watsonville during last weekend's storm. the national weather service confirmed that the twister formed over
